Materials
Gray fox Natural deer hair (tail, stacked)
Saddle hackle, folded (2 for the body, plus 4 more at the wing)
Caribou (7 clumps, each a pencil in diameter)
Lead wire (used only to hold materials out of the way)
How to tie it
Start Nano Silk 12/0 exactly where the body will meet the wing, wrap a base along the whole hook to the point and trim the tag. Starting at that junction fixes the proportions of the whole fly before you tie in a thing.
Stack a section of gray fox and tie it in for the tail, taking one wrap underneath the tail to prop it up.
Tie in the first folded saddle hackle from underneath, then the second in the same spot. Bind the tail and both hackles back against the bare hook with six to eight wraps of wire so nothing gets sheared while you spin the body.
Spin seven clumps of caribou, each about a pencil in diameter, packing each clump tight against the one before it. Whip finish and trim.
Trim the body in stages: long-bladed scissors around the perimeter first, thin-bladed scissors at an angle around the tail for the rough shape, curved scissors for the final shape, then a razor blade broken in half to shave off excess and smooth the body, touching up any uneven spots with scissors.
Undo the wire and switch to Nano Silk 18/0 white for the wing area. Palmer the first hackle along the body at an even angle and spacing, secure by the stem and trim, then follow with the second hackle.
Tie in the wing, trim the butts flush with the body, secure it front and back, divide it evenly and wrap between and around the base of each wing. Finish with three folded hackles tied in by the tip behind the wings and a fourth tied in by the butt.
