Materials

  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (tail, abdomen, wing case)
  • Copper wire rib Copper wire (fine, one length)
  • Hare's ear dubbing Brown dubbing (thorax)
  • Partridge fibers Brown hen hackle (legs)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and wrap to the bend; tie in 3-4 pheasant-tail fibers for a short tail, half a shank long.
  2. Bind in fine copper wire for the rib.
  3. Wrap a slim, tapered pheasant-tail abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Counter-rib the copper wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns and helicopter off the tag.
  5. Tie in a bunch of pheasant-tail fibers pointing rearward as a wing case, tented over the thorax.
  6. Dub a fuller thorax of brown hare's ear, then pull the wing case forward over it and tie down at the eye.
  7. Sweep a few partridge fibers back along each side for legs (or pick out dubbing).
  8. Whip finish and cement.
