Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry (TMC 100), 10-14
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Microfibetts or moose body hair Dun/dark microfibetts or moose body hair (split tails)
  • Superfine dubbing or stripped quill Gray superfine dubbing (abdomen)
  • Dry-fly hackle Grizzly hackle (one)
  • Dry-fly hackle Dun hackle (one)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and split a bunch of dun Microfibetts wide with a dubbing ball, tails one and a half shanks long.
  2. Dub a slim, tapered gray abdomen forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in one grizzly and one dun hackle together at the thorax.
  4. Wind both hackles through the thorax in 5-6 turns, then figure-8 a thin band of dubbing to split them front and back.
  5. Trim the hackle flat across the top and bottom so the barbs stand straight out to each side as spent wings.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
