Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry (TMC 100), 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Turkey biot or dubbing (banded body) Black and yellow chenille or dubbing (abdomen)
  • CDC feathers Natural dun cdc feather (2 (wing))
  • Superfine dubbing Black dubbing (thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the 70% mark and run it to the bend.
  2. Build a banded abdomen forward to the 55% mark, alternating black and yellow segments (wound biot or dubbing) to suggest a wasp's striped body.
  3. Stack two natural dun CDC feathers and tie them in flat over the back as a wing reaching the bend.
  4. For legs, splay a few CDC or black fibers to each side and figure-8 them low (optional).
  5. Dub a dark, slightly bulky thorax of black superfine over the wing butts to float the front and cover the tie-downs.
  6. Whip finish under the eye, no cement on the CDC.
