Classic Recipe

  • Hook Tiemco 100 standard dry-fly hook, #20-24
  • Thread Olive 6/0 (or 8/0)

Materials

  • Thread Olive 6/0 thread (1 spool)
  • Abdomen Gray goose biot (1 biot)
  • Underwing Dun Z-Lon fibers (small pinch)
  • Overwing Gray and white CDC feather sections (1 of each)
  • Legs Mixed white and dark-gray CDC fibers (small pinch)
  • Thorax Gray-olive Superfine dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a gray goose biot by the tip at the bend; wrap it forward in touching turns over the rear two-thirds to form a slim, segmented abdomen and tie off at the 70% point.
  2. Tie in a sparse pinch of dun Z-Lon at 70% as a flat underwing lying over the body, reaching just past the bend.
  3. Over the Z-Lon tie in a small section of gray CDC topped with a section of white CDC as a low adult wing angled slightly back, about one shank length long.
  4. Split a few white and dark-gray CDC fibers out to the sides as sparse legs. Keep it thin, since an adult midge is a slender insect.
  5. Dub a tiny gray-olive Superfine thorax and whip finish behind the eye.
