Hare Sow Bug

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/grub, #14-18
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Body Gray-brown hare's ear (dubbing)
  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (scud back / Thin Skin)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (fine wire)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base around the curve to the bend.
  2. Tie in a strip of clear scud back and a length of fine silver wire at the bend.
  3. Dub a rough, buggy hare's ear body forward to the eye, keeping it slightly flattened and wide.
  4. Pull the scud back over the top to form the shell and bind it down at the eye.
  5. Counter-wrap the wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the shell and lock it, then tie off.
  6. Whip finish and clip.
  7. Pick out the dubbing along the underside for legs and press the body flat so it sits like a sowbug.
