Reference Recipe

  • Hook 4XL streamer, #4-8
  • Thread Tan or olive 6/0

Materials

  • Weight/head Natural case (cone or dumbbell (optional))
  • Tail Olive or tan material (rabbit strip (zonker))
  • Body Olive-tan material (hare dubbing brush, palmered)
  • Pectoral fins Mottled pectoral fins (2 hen/webby hackle)
  • Head/collar Tan/olive carapace (spun deer hair or wool, trimmed)

How to tie it

  1. Add a dumbbell or cone if weighting, then mount the hook and lay a thread base.
  2. Tie in a rabbit-strip tail about one shank length at the bend, hide side down.
  3. Spin or wrap a hare dubbing brush forward over the rear two thirds to build a fat, buggy body.
  4. Tie in two mottled hen hackles flat as pectoral fins, one to each side at the front of the body.
  5. Spin a collar of deer hair or dubbed wool at the front to form the broad sculpin head.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and clip.
  7. Trim the head flat on top and bottom and wide across, tapering to the eye, so it wobbles and pushes water.
