Thread (rib) Black thread (210 denier, or two strands of 70 denier)
Rabbit dubbing (body) Tan (hare's mask fibres optional) (3 in noodle, plus a little more)
Hen hackle fibres (throat) Brown hen hackle (One small bunch)
Head cement Clear head cement (One drop)
How to tie it
Start brown thread and take it back to the bend of the hook.
Take 12-15 pheasant tail fibres, roll them between your fingers to break them up so they do not marry, and tie them in at the bend with a couple of tight wraps so the tips flare slightly as the tail. The same bunch becomes the wingcase, so do not trim the butts.
Tie in the heavy black thread at the rear as the rib and leave your working thread at the back.
Wax the thread and dub a 3 inch noodle of tan rabbit, then wind the body almost all the way to the front, adding a little more dubbing so the front sits noticeably thicker than the rear.
Wind the black thread rib forward in four evenly spaced open turns, tie it off at the front and trim.
Tie a small bunch of brown hen fibres in underneath, on top of the front of the body, as a throat, pull them through until they are the length you want before locking them in, and snip the excess.
Pull the pheasant tail butts forward over the top of the thorax as a thick wingcase, hold and secure with a couple of wraps, then trim the excess.
Build a chunky nymph head, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
