How to tie it
Slot the 3.8mm gold tungsten onto the size 12 J100 and start yellow Perdigon flat body thread.
Tie in a short Coq de Leon tail at the bend and the gold tinsel wire alongside it. Vasies specifically uses wire rather than flat tinsel here because wire bites in and will not slip once the fly is fished.
Dub a shaggy body of hare guard fur forward to the 65% mark. Use guard fur only. He is blunt that mixing in underfur makes the fly noticeably less effective, because the underfur mats down and kills the spiky profile.
Rib forward with the gold wire in five or six open turns and tie off, then pick the body out.
Blend hare guard fur with a little squirrel for a slight contrast and dub the thorax and legs, keeping the dubbing deliberately loose so fibres stick out and move.
Add a hot orange Grip 10/0 collar behind the bead and whip finish. The hot spot is optional. It works well early in the season, but Vasies swaps it for green peacock or black synthetic dubbing once fishing pressure builds.
Fish it as a searching nymph at the start of the season.
