Halo Mayfly Emerger

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

LaFontaine class pattern sheet

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 10-24
  • Thread To match body color 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Clear antron (optional)
  • Tail Marabou fibers (sparse)
  • Abdomen Synthetic seal's fur, dubbed thin (olive, brown, or cream to match the hatch)
  • Halo Clear closed-cell foam (1 strip)
  • Thorax Synthetic seal's fur, dubbed thicker than the abdomen (to match)
  • Spike Orange deer hair (small clump, over the eye)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a sparse clump of marabou fibers for the tail, then a short tag of clear Antron ahead of it if using one.
  2. Dub a thin abdomen forward over about two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Cut a narrow strip of clear closed-cell foam and tie it in by one end at the front of the abdomen, so it can be pulled forward later to form the halo.
  4. Dub a noticeably thicker thorax than the abdomen, working up to a hook-eye's width from the eye.
  5. Pull the foam strip forward over the thorax and tie it off, leaving a rounded "halo" of foam standing proud on top rather than pulled flat.
  6. Tie in a small spike of orange deer hair pointing forward over the eye as a strike indicator, then whip finish.
