Reference Recipe

  • Hook Intruder shank with trailing hook on wire loop, #1-4 (or 25-35mm shank)
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Trailing hook Black shank (short-shank hook on 30lb wire loop)
  • Rear station Black/blue rear station (flash + composite dubbing loop hackle)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (ice dub or braid)
  • Front hackle Blue and black front hackle (schlappen/guinea, composite loop)
  • Eyes Silver metal tape (dumbbell or bead chain)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the shank and lay a thread base, then bind a loop of coated wire along the shank so the trailing hook rides just off the rear point.
  2. At the rear station, tie in a few strands of flash, then spin a sparse composite dubbing loop of chopped hackle and dub and take a few turns to build a short rear collar.
  3. Wrap ice dub or braid forward to the front third to form a slim body.
  4. Build the front station in a single composite loop of blue and black schlappen with guinea, kept wispy and uneven for lifelike movement.
  5. Sweep the front collar back and lock it with thread.
  6. Lash a dumbbell or bead-chain eye near the front for a jigging sink, whip finish, and cement.
  7. Wet the fly and stroke the fibers back; it should thin to a sparse, breathing profile.
