Reference Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead up-eye, #4-8
  • Thread Orange 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (large bead chain)
  • Tag Silver metal tape (diamond braid)
  • Tail Orange permanent marker (kid goat / bucktail, one shank length)
  • Body Silver metal tape (flat diamond braid)
  • Hackle Orange hackle (1 saddle hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash a pair of large bead-chain eyes just behind the eye with tight figure-8 wraps.
  2. Run thread to the bend and tie in silver diamond braid; take one and a half turns to form a short tag.
  3. Tie in an orange goat or bucktail tail one shank length long just ahead of the tag.
  4. Wrap the diamond braid forward in smooth even turns to just behind the eyes and tie off.
  5. Tie in an orange saddle hackle and take two to two and a half turns for a collar, then sweep it back.
  6. Build a small neat head behind the bead-chain eyes and whip finish.
