Hairy Yellow Sally

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #14-16
  • Thread Yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Egg sac Orange permanent marker (dubbing butt)
  • Body Pale yellow d rib larva lace (dubbing)
  • Body hackle Ginger hackle (1 hackle, palmered)
  • Wing Light deer hair (down-wing bunch)
  • Collar hackle Ginger hackle (1 hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
  2. Dub a small orange egg sac at the rear, then tie in a ginger hackle by the tip.
  3. Dub a pale yellow body forward to the 75% mark.
  4. Palmer the body hackle forward through the body in 5-6 open turns and tie off.
  5. Stack a bunch of light deer hair and bind it as a down-wing over the body, tips at the bend.
  6. Tie in a second ginger hackle at the wing base, take 3-4 turns for a bushy collar, and secure.
  7. Build a small head and whip finish.
  8. Leave this one shaggy; the extra hackle keeps it riding high in fast water.
