Hairwing Yellow Sally
Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version
Reference Recipe
- Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #14-16
- Thread Yellow 8/0
Materials
- Egg sac Red-orange egg sac (dubbing or thread butt)
- Body Pale yellow d rib larva lace (dubbing)
- Wing Light natural deer hair (sparse down-wing bunch)
- Hackle Ginger or cream hackle (1 dry hackle)
How to tie it
- Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
- Dub or wrap a small red-orange egg sac at the very rear.
- Dub a slim pale yellow body forward to the 75% mark.
- Stack a sparse bunch of light deer hair and bind it as a low down-wing lying flat over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
- Tie in a ginger hackle at the wing base and take 4-5 turns forward.
- Secure the hackle, build a small head, and whip finish.
- Trim the hackle flat underneath so the fly sits flush in the film like a spent stonefly.
