Hairwing Yellow Sally

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #14-16
  • Thread Yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Egg sac Red-orange egg sac (dubbing or thread butt)
  • Body Pale yellow d rib larva lace (dubbing)
  • Wing Light natural deer hair (sparse down-wing bunch)
  • Hackle Ginger or cream hackle (1 dry hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
  2. Dub or wrap a small red-orange egg sac at the very rear.
  3. Dub a slim pale yellow body forward to the 75% mark.
  4. Stack a sparse bunch of light deer hair and bind it as a low down-wing lying flat over the body, tips reaching just past the bend.
  5. Tie in a ginger hackle at the wing base and take 4-5 turns forward.
  6. Secure the hackle, build a small head, and whip finish.
  7. Trim the hackle flat underneath so the fly sits flush in the film like a spent stonefly.
