Classic Recipe

  • Hook Tiemco 100 standard dry-fly hook, #10-12
  • Thread Olive 6/0

Materials

  • Thread Olive 6/0 thread (1 spool)
  • Tail Moose body hair (6-8 fibers)
  • Body Dark olive dry-fly dubbing (pinch)
  • Rib Bright yellow floss (1 strand)
  • Wing Dark gray/black elk or calf body hair (small clump)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle dyed olive-yellow (1-2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in 6-8 moose body-hair fibers as a tail one shank length long, splayed slightly.
  2. Tie in a strand of bright yellow floss at the tail for the rib, then dub a tapered dark-olive body over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Wrap the yellow floss forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to suggest the green drake's segmentation and tie off at the 65% point.
  4. Stack a clump of dark gray/black elk (or calf) hair and tie it in as an upright, slightly divided wing at the 65% point, one shank length tall.
  5. Tie in one or two grizzly hackles dyed olive-yellow behind and in front of the wing and wrap 5-6 turns for a full, high-floating collar; tie off.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and cement the thread.
