Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #14-18
  • Thread Olive-dun 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun hackle fibers (8-10 fibers, split)
  • Body Olive-gray material (dubbing)
  • Wing Natural deer hair (single upright bunch)
  • Hackle Dun hackle (1 dry hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the 70% mark.
  2. Stack a small bunch of deer hair and bind it as a single upright wing at the 70% mark, tips up, then post the base with thread wraps.
  3. Tie in split tails one shank length long at the bend, spread over a small dubbing ball.
  4. Dub a slim tapered body from the bend up to the wing.
  5. Tie in a dun hackle at the wing base and take 4-5 turns, a couple behind and the rest in front of the wing.
  6. Secure the hackle, form a small head, and whip finish.
  7. Trim the underside hackle flat if you want the fly to ride lower in the film.
