Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #10-12
  • Thread Gray 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Moose body hair (8-10 fibers)
  • Body Gray-olive material (dubbing)
  • Wing Natural deer/elk hair (upright divided bunch)
  • Hackle Grizzly and dun mixed (2 dry hackles)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the 70% mark.
  2. Stack a bunch of deer hair and bind it standing upright there, tips forward, then post and divide it into two wings with figure-8 wraps.
  3. Tie in a small bunch of moose body hair at the bend for a tail one shank length long.
  4. Dub a tapered body forward from the bend to the wing base.
  5. Tie in two dry hackles behind the wing and wind each 3-4 turns behind and in front of the wing.
  6. Secure the hackle tips, build a small head, and whip finish.
  7. Trim any stray fibers so the wings stand clean and upright.
