Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, down eye, #14-18
  • Thread Olive or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Dun microfibetts (6-8 Microfibbets, split)
  • Abdomen Olive-tan material (thin dubbing or turkey biot)
  • Hackle post Clear hackle (monofilament loop)
  • Hackle Dun hackle (1 dry hackle)
  • Thorax Olive-tan material (dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the 70% mark, running a smooth thread base back to the bend.
  2. Split a small bunch of Microfibbets into two tails one shank length long, spread with a dubbing ball at the bend.
  3. Dub a slim tapered abdomen forward to the 60% mark, leaving room up front.
  4. Bind in a loop of monofilament pointing forward over the eye to act as the stacker post, then tie in a dry hackle by its base at the post base.
  5. Wind the hackle 4-5 turns up the standing mono loop, then back down, and secure the tip with a couple of thread wraps at the post base.
  6. Dub a small thorax under and around the post base, keeping it sparse.
  7. Pull the mono loop rearward so the hackle folds flat over the top of the fly like a parachute canopy, bind the loop down at the eye, and snip the excess.
  8. Whip finish and clip. The hackle should lie flat on the surface with the body hanging in the film.
