Thread Gray 8-0 (Uni)
Materials
Tail / trailing shuck Amber Z-Yarn (Z-Lon) (1 small clump)
Rib Brown 6-0 thread (6 in)
Body Muskrat gray dubbing (pinch)
Hackle post Monofilament tippet (3-4X) (1 short length)
Hackle One grizzly and one brown rooster hackle wound together (2 feathers)
How to tie it
Start the gray thread at the mid-shank point and wrap a base back to the bend.
Tie in the amber Z-Yarn shuck (about a hook-gape length past the bend) and the brown 6-0 thread rib at the bend.
Dub a slim muskrat body forward from the bend to the mid-shank point.
Counter-wrap the brown thread rib forward over the body in 4-5 open turns for segmentation; tie off and trim.
Tie in a short loop of monofilament at the mid-shank so it stands up as a post; lock it with three wraps, then take one more loop and lock it down to make a sturdy post.
Tie in the grizzly and brown hackles at the base of the mono post.
Wrap both hackles together up and around the mono post counterclockwise, 4-6 turns, then bring the mono loop forward and down over the top of the hackle so the fibers splay over the body like a parachute; tie the mono off behind the eye.
Trim the mono tag, build a small head and whip finish; the hackle now sits flush on top imitating a low-riding caddis.
