  • Hook Curved scud/sow-bug hook, 14-18
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver (optional) bead (1 tungsten to size)
  • Body Gray flotation (sow-bug/rabbit dubbing)
  • Gut sack Pink/orange gut sack (small dubbing hot spot)
  • Shellback Clear scud back thin skin (Scud Back or Thin Skin)
  • Rib Clear mono or wire (fine)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide a bead to the eye, then mount the hook and start thread.
  2. Tie in a strip of clear shellback and a fine rib at the bend.
  3. Dub a fat gray body toward the front, working in a small pink or orange dubbing ball mid-body as the visible gut sack.
  4. Continue the gray dubbing to just behind the eye.
  5. Pull the clear shellback over the top and bind it behind the eye, then snip.
  6. Counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 turns to segment the back and lock the shell, then tie off and snip.
  7. Whip finish, then pick out the belly dubbing so it looks like a scruffy sow bug with legs.
