Materials

  • Bead Copper bead (1 tungsten to size)
  • Tail Pheasant tail (few fibers)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (fine wire)
  • Body Hare's ear natural (hare's ear dubbing)
  • Shellback Pheasant tail (small bunch fibers)
  • Thorax Hare's ear (dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a copper tungsten bead to the eye and mount the hook.
  2. Tie in a short pheasant-tail tail at the bend, about half a shank.
  3. Bind in the copper wire rib and a bunch of pheasant-tail fibers to become the shellback, tips pointing back.
  4. Dub a tapered hare's-ear body forward to just behind the bead.
  5. Pull the pheasant fibers over the top as a scud-back shellback and bind behind the bead.
  6. Counter-wrap the copper rib in 4-5 turns to segment and pin the shellback, then tie off and snip.
  7. Dub a small buggy thorax, whip finish behind the bead, and pick out the sides for legs.
