Gun Metal Chironomid

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook, 12-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black or silver bead (1 tungsten to size)
  • Body Gunmetal material (black thread or Frostbite)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (fine wire or holographic tinsel)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (peacock or black dubbing)
  • Gills White uni stretch (small tuft antron or poly)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread behind it.
  2. Run thread back to the point and tie in fine silver rib.
  3. Build a slim, smooth gunmetal body forward to just behind the bead, keeping it thread-thin.
  4. Counter-wrap the silver rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for crisp segmentation, then tie off and snip.
  5. Dub a small dark thorax bump right behind the bead.
  6. Tie in a tiny tuft of white antron behind the bead as breathing gills and trim it short.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and coat the body with thin UV resin for a glassy shine.
