Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2X-long nymph hook (Dai-Riki #730 or similar), #10-14
  • Thread fluorescent fire orange 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (7/64 in (sized to hook))
  • Weight Lead-free wire .015 (6-8 turns)
  • Tail Hare's mask guard hairs (small bunch)
  • Rib Gold Ultra Wire (brassie) (4-5 turns)
  • Abdomen Light hare's mask dubbing (dubbed tapered)
  • Wing case Pearlescent Flashabou (several strands)
  • Thorax Peacock herl (3-4 strands)
  • Hackle Hungarian partridge (1 feather, 1-2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead to the eye, wrap 6-8 turns of.015 lead-free wire, and jam it into the bead; start the fire-orange thread and leave a deliberate orange hot-spot band at the bend.
  2. Tie in a hare's mask guard-hair tail, then tie in the gold Ultra Wire rib.
  3. Dub a slim tapered abdomen of light hare's mask dubbing over the back two-thirds.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold rib forward in 4-5 turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in several strands of pearlescent Flashabou for the wing case, then wrap a peacock-herl thorax.
  6. Tie in a Hungarian partridge feather and make 1-2 turns for a soft, mobile hackle collar.
  7. Pull the Flashabou wing case forward over the thorax and tie it down behind the bead, whip finish over a hint of orange thread at the head.
