Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Rear hackle Brown hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)
  • Body Amber vinyl rib medium (peacock herl or amber dubbing)
  • Middle hackle Grizzly hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)
  • Front hackle White/cream front hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend above the point.
  2. Tie in and wind the brown rear hackle, three or four turns, then bind and snip, the aft of the fore-and-aft.
  3. Tie in peacock herl (or amber dubbing) and wrap forward to just past mid-shank for the rear body segment.
  4. Wind the grizzly middle hackle three turns at the 50% mark, tie off, and snip, the added third hackle that makes it a cluster.
  5. Continue the body material forward to the 80% mark for the front segment.
  6. Wind the white front hackle three or four turns, tie off, and snip.
  7. Form a small head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
