Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly / 2XL hopper hook, 10-14
  • Thread Olive (with hot-orange hot-spot thread) 6/0

Materials

  • Body Olive ostrich herl (2mm foam strip)
  • Hot spot Hot orange arctic fox (few thread wraps)
  • Wing Natural dun wing bud (small clump elk hair)
  • Legs Olive/black barred rubber legs (2 pairs round rubber)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (1 dry-fly hackle)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (1 foam tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base from eye to the point at the bend.
  2. Bind a 2mm olive foam strip at the bend and take a few turns of hot-orange thread over it to mark the mid-body segment, the hot spot.
  3. Fold the foam forward, bind it down at the 65% mark to form the fat abdomen, and leave the tag standing as a short wing post.
  4. Tie in a sparse elk-hair wing over the foam, tips reaching the bend, and anchor with tight turns.
  5. Add a pair of rubber legs on each side, splayed fore and aft, using figure-8 wraps to lock them.
  6. Tie in a grizzly hackle and palmer 4-5 turns through the thorax for flotation, then tie off and snip.
  7. Pull a small orange foam tab over the top as a sight indicator, bind at the eye, whip finish, and trim the foam short.
