How to tie it
Lay a thread base from behind the eye back to the start of the bend, and run wax over the thread. Calf tail is slippery and will pull out otherwise.
Cut a generous clump of yellow calf tail, pull out the longest fibres (it is too crinkly to stack) and tie it in at the bend as a tail about one shank-length long. Add a wrap under the bunch to stop it spinning, then a couple of tight wraps forward.
Lift the butts, cut them at a taper, and bind them down. Any lumps will hide under the chenille.
Take the thread forward to about three eye-lengths back from the eye and re-wax it. Tie in a second clump of calf tail the same size as the tail, using three wraps, then wraps under the bunch and behind it to lock it in.
Smooth the shank between the wing and the tail with a few wraps, then split the front clump evenly into two spent wings with your bodkin and fingers and set them with a couple of figure-eight wraps, angled slightly back.
Take the thread to the rear. Strip a little fibre off the end of the yellow chenille so you can tie in the bare thread core at the base of the tail, then run the thread forward to just behind the wings.
Wind the chenille forward in touching turns, packing the last turn or two hard against the back of the wings, then jam one turn in front of them so no thread shows; tie off and snip.
Pull everything back, take the thread to just behind the eye and build a small wet-fly head, then whip finish with four turns. No cleanup needed. Buggy is the point.
