Mount the hook and start orange silk about one eye-length behind the eye; wind smooth touching turns back to just short of the bend.
Return the thread forward in touching turns to build a slim, even body of bare orange silk, stopping about one and a half eye-lengths short of the eye. Keep it thin. The silk is the body.
Select a small mottled feather from a grouse neck; the fibers should reach no longer than the hook point when wound.
Strip the base fluff, tie the feather in by its tip at the front of the body with the concave side toward you, and trim the tip stub.
Take one to two turns of hackle only, stroking the fibers back and down so they sweep toward the bend; tie off and trim the surplus.
Build a small, neat silk head, whip finish, and add a touch of clear varnish.
