Classic Recipe

Materials

  • Tail GP tippet (small)
  • Body Claret seal or sub (dubbed)
  • Rib Gold wire (fine)
  • Wing Grouse tail (slips)
  • Hackle Claret hen (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of golden pheasant tippet fibres as a tail, half a shank length long.
  3. Dub a slim, slightly tapered claret seal-fur body forward to one-third behind the eye, using half the dubbing you think you need.
  4. Counter-rib with fine gold wire in 4-5 open turns, tie off and snip.
  5. Strip a sparse claret hen hackle, take 2 turns as a soft collar and sweep the fibres down and back.
  6. Cut a matched pair of grouse tail slips, marry them dull-to-dull and set a low wing over the body, tips to the bend.
  7. Whip finish a small head and varnish.
