Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 10-16
  • Thread Gray 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Brown bucktail (forked)
  • Body Yellow floss (full)
  • Wing Brown calf tail (upright)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown hackle (mixed)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, tie in a forked brown bucktail tail, one shank length.
  2. Wrap a smooth yellow floss body to the 60% mark.
  3. Stack and tie in brown calf tail wings, upright and divided.
  4. Wrap mixed grizzly and brown hackle, dense, behind and in front of the wings.
  5. Whip finish, cement.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Yellow floss: Yellow dubbing — Floats better than floss; Yellow Antron yarn — Quick to wrap, buoyant
  • Tail instead of Brown bucktail: Moose body hair — Stiffer, darker; Elk hair — More buoyant
  • Wing instead of Brown calf tail: Brown poly yarn — Synthetic, more durable; Natural elk hair — Good visibility and flotation
