Reference Recipe

  • Hook Short-shank jig hook, 14
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Black/red tungsten bead (3.2 mm)
  • Latex nymph wrap (Fulling Mill), 2 mm To taste (tail pieces)
  • Exo Skin Dark permanent marker (tail overlay)
  • Micro minnow dub (hot spot) To taste (small tuft)
  • CalfX dub (body) Bibio (black/red/claret) (dubbing loop)
  • Colored UV resin To taste (hot spot coat)

How to tie it

  1. Secure the black/red bead on a size 14 short-shank jig hook and start the thread.
  2. Build the tail off the hook: cut a forked tail from the 2 mm latex, glue a piece of Exo Skin on top with super glue, then glue a small tuft of micro minnow dub near the base as a hot spot; coat the hot spot with colored UV resin and cure.
  3. Tie the composite tail in at the bend with a beefy dubbing loop, hot spot facing down so it shows when the fly rides point-up; trim and lock.
  4. Make a dubbing loop of bibio CalfX dub, twist it, and wrap forward to the bead to form the body; tie off.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
