Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 12-16
  • Thread Straw (Pearsall's Gossamer) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Straw-coloured Pearsall's Gossamer, waxed (full body)
  • Body The waxed straw silk (shank)
  • Hackle Light feather from a partridge's breast (1-2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Run the straw silk from behind the eye to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark; the straw silk itself is the body.
  2. Tie in a light barred feather from a partridge's breast by the tip near the front.
  3. Take one or two sparse turns of hackle and secure.
  4. Stroke the hackle fibres back so they sweep along the body, build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
