Classic Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / spider hook, down-eye, 16-18
  • Thread grey 8/0

Materials

  • Silk body Grey (ash) silk (full length of shank)
  • Dubbing Grey-dun heron herl or mole fur, very sparse (pinch)
  • Head Magpie or peacock herl (1 strand)
  • Hackle Small pale dun feather from a starling or grey plover (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Run the grey silk from behind the eye to above the barb, then forward two-thirds.
  2. Twist a very sparse wisp of grey-dun herl or mole fur onto the silk and wind a slim grey body over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. Tie in a strand of dark herl and make two turns for a tiny dark head, then tie off.
  4. Tie in the small pale dun soft hackle by its tip just behind the head.
  5. Take 1.5 sparse turns of hackle, secure, clip the stem, whip finish and varnish.
