Duck or goose quill slip Green duck or goose quill slip (One slip for the tail)
Mylar tinsel Silver oval tinsel (Medium, for the rib)
Wool yarn Green wool yarn (One full four-strand length for the body)
Hackle fibers Chartreuse (grizzly dyed chartreuse used here) (A medium tuft for the throat)
Mallard flank feather Natural barred wood duck flank (One tip, folded, for the wing)
How to tie it
Start black 140 denier thread mid-shank on a size 6 3x long streamer hook and take it back to the rear.
Tie in a green duck (or goose) quill slip as a long tail, pinching the feather and hook together and checking with a couple of medium wraps that it is sitting on top before locking it down. Do not worry about a small lump, the thick yarn body will cover it.
Move the thread forward to a couple of eye-lengths behind the eye and tie in medium silver Mylar tinsel with loose open wraps back down the shank so the first rib wrap comes off the side.
Tie in a full strand of green wool yarn the same way, binding it back to where the body will start, then bring the thread back to the front.
Park the tinsel out of the way with a magnet and wrap the yarn forward in touching turns to the thread. It should look thick, which makes the rib stand out. Tie off and trim.
Wrap the silver rib forward in evenly spaced turns, not too close together so the body still reads green. Tie it off, then fold the tinsel back, take two or three wraps over the fold and a couple more going forward to really lock it in.
Flip the fly and tie in a medium tuft of chartreuse hackle fibers underneath as a throat, long enough to show well. Secure and snip the excess.
Take a mallard flank tip and fold it over along the stem so the two sides come together into a single tent-shaped wing. Tie it in on top with a pinch wrap, sitting low against the body.
Trim the wing nub, take the thread back and build a big streamer head, then bring it forward behind the eye to bury the stub cleanly.
Whip finish and coat the head with UV resin or head cement.
