How to tie it
Because this is a Spey fly, start the short body well forward of the usual point. Dub a dull green body from a mix of light and dark green, brown and a touch of yellow Berlin wool, kept comparatively short.
Tie in three ribs from separate starting points: narrow gold tinsel, narrow silver tinsel and light olive-green thread. Wind the two metal ribs the reverse way, equally spaced, and leave the thread until the hackle is on.
Tie in a red Spey-cock hackle and wind it from the root in the usual direction so it crosses over the metal ribs, giving the long flowing Spey profile; leave a few fluffy fibres at the root of the stem.
Wind the light olive-green thread over the hackle, between the fibres, to lock it in.
Add two turns of teal at the throat, then set two short mallard strips (brown mottled points, grey roots) as the wing, no longer than the body. Form a small head and whip finish.
