Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 14-16
  • Thread Green (Pearsall's Gossamer) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Green Pearsall's Gossamer (full body)
  • Body Bright green silk, or green peacock herl (shank)
  • Hackle Small pale honey-dun or light starling feather (1 turn)

How to tie it

  1. Run the green silk from behind the eye to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark; the green silk (or a wound green peacock herl over it) forms the body.
  2. If using herl, tie in a strand of green peacock herl at the tail, wind forward for a soft green body, and tie off.
  3. Tie in a small soft pale feather by the tip at the two-thirds mark.
  4. Take one sparse turn of hackle, secure, and stroke the fibres back.
  5. Build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
