Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard-length dry fly, barbless, #12-16 (size 14 tied in the video)
  • Thread White (black is fine) 70 denier

Materials

  • Lady Amherst pheasant tippets Natural white with black bars (Eight to ten fibers for the tail)
  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (One strand for the underbody)
  • Floss Green (any color works) (One length for the rib)
  • Dry fly hackle Bleached grizzly (cream or white also work) (One feather, three or four wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread on a size 14 standard dry fly hook and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in eight to ten Lady Amherst pheasant tippet fibers as a fairly long tail, trying to get both black bars showing.
  3. Take the thread up close to the front and tie in a length of green floss, binding it down back to the start of the tail, then bring the thread forward again.
  4. Tie in one strand of peacock herl, catching it in a couple of inches from the tip so you are past the brittle part, and bind it back along the shank.
  5. Wrap the peacock herl forward in touching turns all the way to the front, watching the hook point, and tie it off. This herl underbody is what makes the fly durable.
  6. Cord the floss up slightly, not flat and not fully twisted, then wrap it forward over the herl as an open rib. Test the band width with a couple of wraps before committing, then tie it off at the front.
  7. Tie in the bleached grizzly hackle well back from the eye so you have room for plenty of wraps.
  8. Take three or four (or more) close wraps of hackle for a heavily hackled, high-floating collar and tie it off.
  9. Sweep the forward-pointing barbs back, take a few wraps to make a flat area, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
