Nymph · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL curved nymph hook (TMC 200R), 10-12
  • Thread olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Grizzly/hen (3 fibers)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (fine wire)
  • Abdomen Brown-olive material (Antron dubbing)
  • Gills Olive ostrich herl (1-2 filoplumes)
  • Back/Carapace Dark golden-brown turkey (one strip)
  • Wingcase Dark turkey (one strip, epoxied)
  • Legs Grizzly/grouse (flat over thorax)
  • Thorax Brown-olive material (Antron dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, add a few weighting wraps at the thorax, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in three grouse or hen fibers for a short tail, then bind in the copper rib and a turkey strip for the abdomen back.
  3. Dub a slim brown-olive abdomen over the rear two-thirds, pull the turkey strip over as a carapace, and rib it with 5 open counter-wraps.
  4. Tie in an olive filoplume on each side as gills, sweeping back, then tie in a dark turkey wingcase strip.
  5. Dub a fatter brown-olive thorax, then fold grizzly or grouse fibers flat along each side as legs.
  6. Pull the wingcase forward over the thorax and bind it behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish, then coat the wingcase with a thin drop of epoxy or UV resin for the signature poxyback shine.
