Green Drake Paradrake

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread olive 8/0

Materials

  • Extended body Dun/olive deer hair (small clump)
  • Tail Moose (3 fibers off the body tip)
  • Rib Olive ostrich herl (thread, over the body)
  • Post/Wing Dun microfibetts (poly yarn or deer hair)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (one, parachute)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Bind a clump of dun deer hair by the tips at the bend, then spiral the thread up the clump and back down in open turns to form a segmented extended body one shank long.
  3. Leave three tip fibers protruding as tails and return the thread to the 65% mark.
  4. Stand a poly-yarn or deer-hair post upright at the 65% mark.
  5. Tie in a grizzly-dyed-olive hackle at the post base.
  6. Wind the hackle parachute-style down the post in 5-6 turns and lock it off against the thread.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and trim the post to about one gap tall.
