Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL-2XL curved nymph hook (Umpqua C400BL / TMC 5262), 10-12
  • Thread olive 6/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold tungsten bead (one, sized to hook)
  • Tail Brown goose biots (2, splayed)
  • Abdomen Olive ostrich herl (dubbing)
  • Rib Gold middle (fine wire)
  • Thorax Dark olive material (dubbing with a peacock accent)
  • Wingcase Pearl flashabou (Flashabou or dark synthetic)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold tungsten bead to the eye and mount the hook, adding a few lead-free wraps behind the bead for weight.
  2. Start thread at the bend and tie in two brown goose biots splayed into a V tail, about half a shank long.
  3. Bind in the gold wire rib, then dub a slim olive abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire rib in 5 open turns and tie off for segmentation.
  5. Tie in the pearl wingcase material, then dub a fatter dark-olive thorax with a strand of peacock worked in, up to the bead.
  6. Pull the wingcase forward over the thorax, bind it behind the bead, and snip the excess.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement the thread.
