Green Drake Foam

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread olive 8/0

Materials

  • Extended body Olive ostrich herl (2mm foam strip)
  • Tail Moose (3 fibers, split)
  • Rib Black ostrich herl (fine thread, over foam)
  • Wing/Post White or dun material (poly yarn)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (one, parachute)
  • Thorax Olive ostrich herl (fine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run thread to the bend.
  2. Cut a narrow olive foam strip, bind it in at the bend, and segment the rear extension with 4-5 open thread wraps to form a foam extended body one shank length long.
  3. Split three moose fibers off the tip of the extension as tails, then return the thread to the 65% mark.
  4. Stand a poly-yarn post upright at the 65% mark and post the thread base up around it.
  5. Tie in a grizzly-dyed-olive hackle at the post base and dub a slim olive thorax around it.
  6. Wind the hackle parachute-style down the post in 4-5 turns and lock it off against the thread.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye and trim the post to about one gap tall.
