Materials

  • Bead Black nickel bead (3mm tungsten)
  • Body Transparent grey marked (synthetic nymph skin)
  • Hot spot Blue macaw (Perdigon Skin Small PSM1 or blue perdigon tinsel, at the rear)
  • Thorax Grey, rusty and black (dark thorax dubbing and Mad Rabbit Dubbing mixed)
  • Legs Grey rubber legs (partridge barbs)

How to tie it

  1. Bead the DHG 903 with a 3mm black nickel tungsten and lay a green Veevus Stomach underbody along the shank. The nymph skin over it is translucent, so this green underbody is what makes the fly a green caddis at all.
  2. Tie in the blue Perdigon Skin or tinsel at the rear as a hot spot, keeping it short so it reads as a spot rather than a tag.
  3. Tie in the transparent grey marked nymph skin and wrap it forward in overlapping turns to the 65% mark, stretching as you go. The stretch thins the material and produces the segmentation.
  4. Blend dark thorax dubbing with Mad Rabbit in grey, rusty and black and dub a contrasting thorax behind the bead. The dark front against the bright green body is the profile of a free-swimming rhyacophila larva.
  5. Tie in partridge barbs behind the bead as legs, sweep them back and whip finish.
  6. Fish it as a dropper, as the point fly in a team, or on its own. Vasies uses size 10 in Sweden and drops to smaller sizes on Polish and other European rivers.
