Reference Recipe

  • Hook up-eye salmon/steelhead wet hook, 4-8
  • Thread black 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Silver metal tape (oval tinsel, a few turns)
  • Butt Fluorescent green material (floss or short chenille)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (floss or dubbing)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (oval tinsel)
  • Hackle Black hackle (one soft cock hackle, collar)
  • Wing Black ostrich herl (bear hair or black bucktail)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to a point above the barb.
  2. Wrap a short oval-silver tag, then build a fat fluorescent-green butt covering the rear 15% of the shank.
  3. Tie in the oval rib, then dub or wind a slim black body forward to the 80% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib forward in 5 evenly spaced turns and tie off for a segmented, durable body.
  5. Wind a black soft-hackle collar of 2-3 turns and sweep the fibers back and down.
  6. Stack a sparse black bucktail or bear-hair wing on top, tips reaching the hook bend, and bind it with tight turns.
  7. Form a small tapered head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
