Green Butt Skunk

Salmon/Steelhead · Wet Fly · Steelhead · Salmon · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead wet fly, 2-6
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Red hackle fibers (sparse)
  • Butt Fluorescent green chenille (small)
  • Body Black chenille (full)
  • Rib Flat silver tinsel (5 inches)
  • Hackle Black hen (collar)
  • Wing White calf tail or bucktail (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, tie in a sparse red hackle-fiber tail.
  2. Wrap a small, distinct butt of fluorescent green chenille at the bend. 2-3 turns, a bright band, not a blob.
  3. Tie in the tinsel rib and wrap the black chenille body to the 75% mark. Rib through in 5 turns.
  4. Wrap a black hen collar and sweep it back.
  5. Tie in a sparse white calf tail wing to the tail tip. Neat head, whip finish, cement.

Substitutions

  • Butt instead of Fluorescent green chenille: Fl. green Ice Dub — Sparkly green butt; Fl. green floss — Slimmer profile
  • Body instead of Black chenille: Black dubbing — Slimmer profile; Black Ice Dub — Adds flash
  • Wing instead of White calf tail or bucktail: White EP Fibers — Synthetic, dries faster; White bucktail — Classic choice, stiff
