How to tie it
Start Sumo 50 den behind the eye and wind back to the bend of the curved hook, laying a smooth base.
Tie in the blue UV flat tinsel at the bend and take two or three turns as a short butt, then catch in the 0.2mm gold wire. The blue UV butt is a subtle flash trigger that still shows in the deep, rocky water this fly is built for.
Blend yellow and olive Mad Rabbit together and dub forward to the 65% mark. Mixing gives the dirty algae-green of a real caddis larva rather than a flat single colour.
Rib forward with five or six open turns of gold wire, counter-wound so it locks the dubbing down and survives being bounced off rocks.
Dub a short, dense black thorax over the front quarter of the shank; dark thorax against a light body is the classic caddis-larva contrast.
Finish with a few turns of A4 Perdigon body thread as a hot spot collar behind the eye, whip finish, and pick the body out hard. Buggy beats tidy in deep rocky water.
