Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 100), 12-16
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Underbody Peacock ice dub (2-3 herls)
  • Shell/Back Green shell lip (one strip 2mm foam)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (6 rubber-leg fibers)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (small foam tag)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread behind the eye, running a smooth base back to the bend.
  2. Cut a strip of green 2mm foam a bit wider than the gap and bind one end in at the bend, tag pointing back.
  3. Twist 2-3 peacock herls into a rope and wrap forward to the 80% mark for a fat, buggy underbody, then tie off.
  4. Fold the foam forward over the herl to form the shell and bind it down at the 80% mark, leaving a stub for the head.
  5. Tie in three rubber legs across the underside just behind the tie-down point, splayed so three point each side.
  6. Snip a tiny square of orange foam and bind it on top as a sighter, then trim the shell stub to a short head.
  7. Whip finish under the head and trim the legs to about one shank length each.
