Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60-degree jig hook (Umpqua U555), 6 (8-1)
  • Thread color to match body 6/0

Materials

  • Lead/dumbbell eyes As desired dumbbell eyes (medium pair)
  • Blood quill marabou Olive/brown/black blood quill marabou (1 feather (tail))
  • Crystal hackle Brown hackle (medium, 1 strand)
  • Holographic flashabou As desired holographic flashabou (underbody)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread on the jig hook (not up on the upturned eye) and lay a tight base back to above the barb.
  2. Position the lead eyes about 3/4 to 7/8 of the way up the shank; lock them with a dozen tight X-wraps then 8-10 posting wraps around the base.
  3. Tie in a blood quill marabou tail at the bend, roughly between one shank length and the full hook length; twist and trim the butts and bind them forward to the eyes for a smooth underbody.
  4. Tie in a length of crystal hackle at the tail and bind it along the shank back up to the eyes.
  5. Tie in holographic flashabou at the tail for the underbody and bind it forward.
  6. Wrap the flashabou forward to just behind the eyes to build a slim flashy body and tie off.
  7. Palmer the crystal hackle forward in open turns to behind the eyes, tie it off and trim.
  8. Whip finish behind the eyes and add cement.
