Gray Drake Foam Spinner

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10-14
  • Thread Gray 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tails Dark dun (Microfibetts) (2-3 fibers, split)
  • Abdomen Gray flotation (thin gray foam strip or dubbing)
  • Wings White/light dun material (1 poly-yarn clump, spent)
  • Thorax Gray flotation (1 pinch dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Split two or three dun Microfibett tails wide, each about one shank length, splayed over a tiny dubbing ball.
  3. Tie in a thin gray foam strip and wrap or bind it forward to the 65% mark for a slim, floating segmented abdomen.
  4. Tie a clump of white poly yarn across the shank and figure-8 it flat into spent wings.
  5. Dub a sparse gray thorax around the wing base to lock the wings spent.
  6. Sweep and even the wings, then build a small head.
  7. Whip finish and use half the dubbing you think for a slim, low-riding silhouette.
