Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 6x long streamer, #6
  • Thread Burnt orange 140 denier

Materials

  • Marabou Brown marabou (One small-to-medium tuft for the tail)
  • Floss Brown floss (About eight inches, folded to give two strands for the rib)
  • Chenille Orange finesse chenille (Small, for the body)
  • Indian rooster saddle feathers Dark ginger indian rooster saddle feathers (Two, glued together, for the wing)
  • Jungle cock eyes Natural jungle cock (One pair, long ones, for the cheeks)

How to tie it

  1. Start burnt orange 140 denier thread on a size 6 6x long streamer hook and take it back to the rear.
  2. Tie in a small-to-medium tuft of brown marabou as the tail, burying the butts forward and snipping any excess.
  3. Take the thread to about midshank, lay an eight-inch length of brown floss across the shank and secure it with one or two wraps, then fold the near end back so you end up with two strands hanging as the rib. Two strands are needed to show up against the thick chenille body.
  4. Park the thread up front, tie in small orange chenille at the front and wrap the thread back over it toward the rear to help build the underbody.
  5. Wrap the chenille forward in touching turns up to the thread and tie it off.
  6. Gather the two floss strands (twist them if they start separating) and counter-wrap them forward in evenly spaced turns so they do not sink into the chenille grooves. Tie off at the front.
  7. Take two dark ginger Indian saddle feathers, pre-glued together at the point where the barbs meet the stems and with extra barbs stripped off the bottom so they lie flat. Tie the wing in on top with a couple of loose wraps, check that it is sitting in the plane of the hook and laying back correctly, then lock it down with tighter wraps and snip the stems.
  8. Tie a long jungle cock eye on each side as a cheek, then trim the butts.
  9. Build a big streamer head with plenty of thread wraps, whip finish, and coat with a big drop of UV resin for a hard glossy head.
