Materials
Wool yarn Orange poly yarn (One short length for the tail/tag, brushed out)
Chenille Black chenille (Medium, one length)
Chenille White chenille (Medium, one length)
Calf tail (or pink wool) Pink hair (A small tuft for the throat)
Calf tail White calf body hair (A sparse bunch for the wing)
Fox squirrel tail Natural deer hair (A small sliver as a topping)
How to tie it
Pinch the barb on a size 8 extra-long streamer hook and start black thread up front. Tie in the orange wool yarn at the front and wrap it back to the rear, which builds a little underbody and keeps you from getting a lump at the back.
Trim the orange wool tail, erring on the long side, then brush it out fluffy with a velcro brush now, before other materials are in the way.
Tie in both pieces of medium chenille at the rear, black on the bottom and white on the top.
Wrap the banded body: pull the bottom (black) chenille forward and take one wrap, then swap positions and bring the white one forward for the next wrap, alternating over and under so each color makes a distinct band rather than a spiral. Keep every wrap going the same way around the shank so the bands stay clean.
Continue swapping colors band by band up the shank, then tie both chenilles off short of the eye and trim, taking a few extra wraps to tame the front.
Tie in a small tuft of pink calf tail (or pink wool teased out) underneath as a throat.
Wax the thread, then tie in a sparse bunch of white calf tail on top as the wing, reaching to about the bend of the hook but not past the tail. Use a pinch wrap, plus one wrap underneath to keep it from spinning without propping it up, and a couple more on top.
Trim the butts, then add a small sliver of fox squirrel tail as a topping over the white, matched to the same length. A pinch wrap and a couple of tight wraps, keeping it on top.
Take the thread back behind the eye and build a good-sized streamer head, then whip finish.
Fluff the orange tail again, trim any rogue fibers, and add a drop of head cement.
