Reference Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/salmon wet-fly hook (or trailer on a shank), 1.5-5
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Tag/Butt Chartreuse arctic fox (flash or wire)
  • Tail Orange permanent marker (1 hackle-fiber or marabou tuft)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (chenille or dubbing)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (oval tinsel)
  • Body Hackle Orange hackle (1 palmered saddle)
  • Collar Chartreuse over orange (1-2 soft-hackle/schlappen feathers)
  • Wing/Flash Blood red and chartreuse (few strands Flashabou)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; lay a short chartreuse butt at the bend.
  2. Tie in a small orange tail no longer than one gap.
  3. Bind in the silver rib and an orange body hackle, then dub or wrap a black body forward to the 75% mark.
  4. Palmer the orange hackle back through the body and counter-wrap the silver rib forward to lock it in 5-6 turns.
  5. Wrap a soft orange hackle collar, then a chartreuse collar in front, sweeping the fibers back.
  6. Add a few strands of blood-red and chartreuse flash along the sides for a moving-water accent.
  7. Build a neat head, whip finish, and cement.
